Ao longo dos anos 30, Orson Welles, depois de uma vibrante trajetória  teatral, dedica-se a adaptar clássicos da literatura para o rádio. Além de Shakespeare, Dickens, Bram Stocker e A guerra dos mundos (de H. G. Wells), Welles adapta O coração das trevas, acentuando o que ele chamou de First Person Singular. Anos depois, tenta levar o romance de Conrad para as telas, mas fracassa. O projeto fracassado ressurge em Citizen Kane, e viria a articular um modo de narrar, que parte da pluralidade das mídias (ou intermedialidade) para acentuar a performance.
